Can I line up weekdays in columns, like other calendar apps?

Yes, with the Fixed Week layout. The default Date Grid layout starts each month on the 1st, while Fixed Week lines up weekdays in columns across every month. There is also a Vertical layout that shows months as columns with days flowing downward.

Open the calendar menu and choose Display Options to switch layouts. Fixed Week and Vertical are Premium features, and Vertical is currently in beta.
